For once I'm excited to write
After our conversation in last Friday's class I have been really looking forward to starting the research process. I read Measure for Measure for my personal play and was so impressed by Shakespeare's ability to include so many moral lessons, and so many more lessons from a spiritual stand point, such as Mercy vs Judgement, fear and faith, etc. I looked back at everything else I have written and worked on for class and I can tell how I was just throwing ideas and things out there to just get assignments done and what not. But after our class discussion on Friday I've had this urge to really pursue the idea of an author's ability to write with a "mission" in mind. I feel like a lot of recent books and writing lately isn't very...substantial? It's just easy writing, fun stories to read. But with Shakespeare, I think the biggest reason why he was such a genius was because you could learn from each of his stories and relate to them with your own personal lives. As a creative writer myself, I am constantly trying to figure out ways to be an influence for good for the young adult/teenage/adolescent world, and it's something I'm passionate about. I hope that I can find a good connection with that and Shakespeare's ease at doing so within Measure for Measure.

This is interesting, Amelia, because I feel I have felt the same way about writing today--but from the opposite standpoint. For a long time I've been interested in "serious" contemporary literature, and to me it feels like so much of today's writing lacks substantial stories. There's so much sex, drugs, violence, and depression that they almost forget to plot anything at all because plot isn't "serious" enough. It's funny that both ends of the spectrum have the same problem.
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea, Amelia. It's a very relevant point in today's writing and something that be personally applied, which I think is really important. I'm interested to see where this will take you. Good luck!
