It wasn't hard choosing which play I wanted to write my
paper on, I just checked out the schedule for next season’s Utah Shakespearean
Festival. I chose Love’s Labour's Lost and began examining the text. The poetic
language was a main focus of the play with all of its inconspicuous sonnets and
punny word play, but I knew from the outset of the paper that I am more of a
context type person. When I reached the unresolved ending, I didn't know
immediately that it would be paper topic. First I read summaries of the play
and important plot points on study guide websites to make sure I understood all
the major themes. The ending of the play came up on several sites and I soon
settled on it as a good topic to explore. I began to gather information,
researching the time period when Shakespeare wrote the play and finding good
evidence that backed up why Shakespeare ended the play unresolved. As I wrote
my paper, I was surprised how one idea led to another and the points I was
making grew into deeper insights that I hadn't expected. I now feel I have a
deeper understanding of the play and why it ended the way it did. I hope to
share some of my ideas at the Utah Shakespeare Festival symposium, as they were
the reason I first chose to write about the play.
